Behold, Moses and Elijah appeared to them talking with him. - Matthew 17:3
These two heavenly messengers were talking with Jesus; they were discussing His upcoming death. This suggests several things. One is that the death of Jesus was part of the divine plan. It was no disaster or defeat but was planned in heaven that He was to die on a cross.
Another thought is that Moses and Elijah had been sent to talk with Jesus because He was now about to turn His face toward Jerusalem. They were sent to strengthen Him for the sad journey and its painful end. Before Jesus went to the wilderness there was a vision of glory and a voice spoke, voicing God the Father's approval in order to strengthen Him to endure His temptation. Now again when He is setting out for His cross there is a vision and a voice to prepare Him for the darkness and the suffering he will endure.
In these heavenly visits we have a hint of the work of the redeemed in heaven. These two men are sent all the way to earth to comfort and cheer a weary spirit in its mission of suffering. Could it be that all the saved will have this responsibility in glory? It is delightful to think that we will be sent from world to world on errands of love. The idea that in heaven we will do nothing for ever but rest on green banks and sing praises to God is not in the Bible. We are to be like Christ, and He is never idle, but always busy in loving service. We will be like the angel. They are ministering spirits, sent out to minister to the heirs of salvation. “His servants shall serve him” is one description of our work in heaven. It will be even greater there to minister than to be ministered to. Those who serve there will be greatest. Our work here is only training for work in heaven and in the New Heavens and New Earth.
Apply This To Your Life Today... Do you live life with the understanding of the greatness of service? As believer's we should rejoice at the opportunity to serve God and others through eternity!
