A Man After My Own Heart

A Man After My Own Heart

ReferenceActs 13:22b
"...he made David their king [Paul speaking of God]. He testified concerning him: 'I have found David son of Jesse a man after my own heart; he will do everything I want him to do.'"

Thoughts for Today:

We all know David wasn't perfect. After all it was David who had Bathsheba's husband Uriah the Hittite killed to cover up his immorality. So, if David was capable of doing such great wrongs, why did God say, "He will do everything I want him to do"? Because God knew that David (unlike Saul) was "a man after my own heart."

When my son Ryan was a boy, I would come home from work after a stressful day at the office to find Ryan and his friends playing the latest seasonal sport (baseball, football, basketball, etc.) in the street. Ryan would always stop in the middle of the game and run up to my car as I pulled in the driveway to ask me if I wanted to play. More times than not I would agree, rush in the house to do a quick change, and then play with the boys until dark. Ryan knew my heart: I love him, I love sports, and I love to play. Those are some of my fondest memories of Ryan's youth. That bond we built by just being together (getting to know each other really well) has lasted a lifetime, and has gotten us through all the ups and downs that come with growing up.

I think God is saying something similar about David in this verse. God knew that David wasn't perfect, but He also knew something else: David always pursed a relationship with Him. David loved what the Lord loved (he was "a man after my own heart"), and as a result the Lord also knew how he would respond. Sure he would make mistakes throughout his life, but the Lord knew that ultimately David would "do everything I want him to do." Why? Because the Lord knew that He had David's heart.

Questions to Ponder:

Do you love what the Lord loves? Are you a man after the Lord's own heart? During your times of failure do you return to the Lord? The Lord is always available -- are you pursuing a relationship with Him during your joyful times that will last throughout your days of despair? Take a few minutes right now to confess where you have not been perfect; where you have missed the mark of God's perfection. Be specific. Now, accept God's forgiveness and move ahead with confidence that He loves you and wants to help you fight off sin.
