You know, I don’t think it was an accident that the enemy approached Eve in the Garden of Eden when she was by herself. He knew that in order to change Eve’s thinking, he had to wait until Adam wasn’t around. He had to wait until Eve wasn’t in fellowship with Adam to attack her.
The same thing goes for you and me as believers. Satan knows there are just some things that can’t happen in the council of the godly. That’s why, when I first started walking with God, there was one thing that helped make it “stick.” I chose to be around the right people. And I chose not to be around the wrong people. I knew I had to do this to give myself a fair shot at true and lasting change.
First John 1:7 says, “But if we walk in the light, as he is in the light, we have fellowship one with another, and the blood of Jesus Christ his Son cleanseth us from all sin.” And part of walking in the light is going to church!
Now, I’m not talking about just showing up every Sunday and sitting in a pew. I’m talking about discipleship—or taking someone by the hand and ensuring that they make it in the Christian life! That’s exactly what the church did for me. They discipled me until I could stand on the Word on my own.
So what about you? What does your church fellowship look like today? Are you seeking wisdom from godly counsel? Does most of your social circle consist of believers? And, as a follower of Jesus, who are you leading by the hand?
In Hebrews 10:25, the Word says “Not forsaking or neglecting to assemble together [as believers], as is the habit of some people, but admonishing (warning, urging, and encouraging) one another, and all the more faithfully as you see the day approaching.”
Today, I encourage you… if you haven’t been in regular church fellowship… to get back to doing what God asks of you and go back to church. Because there you will be encouraged to stick with your walk with God.
If you have been regularly going, then make sure someone else is able to stand by becoming a disciple-maker. There are so many that attend church, but need your encouragement to learn to truly live for God. Your helping someone else will be a blessing to you and them at the same time!
