Lord, I worship you for your greatness and for bowing low to be with me.

The Humble King Who is like the LORD our God, the One who sits enthroned on high, who stoops down to look on the heavens and the earth? —PSALM 113:5-6 Imagine that it is late afternoon on the first day a human had walked on earth. The God who had just made stars, water, and trees does something remarkable: he begins a conversation with the first human. In talking with Adam, God demonstrates that he is a God who bows low to be with his creation. Later, when Adam and Eve turn against him, God searches for them (see Genesis 3:8), again humbling himself to be with his children. We rarely think of God as humble. High, holy, exalted, yes, but not humble. Yet from the beginning of creation, God has stooped to relate to us because he loves us so much. We see the ultimate display of God's humility in Christ. When the Son of God took his place among us, he "made himself nothing, taking the very nature of a servant, being made in human likeness" (Philippians 2:7). Christ stepped down so that we could step up. He took less so that we could have more. This kind of humility grows out of a heart that genuinely loves others and wants to help them succeed. And so, as we love others, we remain close to the God who humbly stays by our side.
